The Celebration of Life gone by

Subscriber onlyIt is interesting to drive past the cemetery on Walnut Street in Rogers. Since I bowl on a regular basis at the Rogers Bowling Center, I make multiple trips past it every year. Continue reading...

Did you get your mail today?

Subscriber onlyToday, mailboxes are everywhere. However, that was not always the case. Mailboxes were not used until around the 1850's when postage stamps were introduced. Up until that time, folks went to the Post Office to pay for sending items via the mail. Once stamps became available, mail could be sent by individuals from home and did not require a trip to the post office to make the required payment. It was also around this time that collection boxes were created where people could drop off their outgoing mail. These boxes were usually mounted on lamp posts. It took another 50 years before these were replaced with free standing ones. Continue reading...

The glory of God's world from my back porch

Subscriber onlyIt's the beginning of another week, and I am sitting on my porch enjoying the peace and quiet of an early spring morning. The windows are wide open for the first time since we began closing out the cold winds of winter. The sounds that touch my ear are those I recognize from springs gone by, just as familiar and just as welcome. Continue reading...

The sound of sirens

The greatest gift to mankind

Subscriber onlyAs the Christmas season approaches, we think about giving presents to those who have a special meaning for us. Usually that includes family and friends who we love and want to thank for being in our life. This is not a new custom nor is it particular to the United States. There are those who believe the giving of Christmas presents dates back to the gifts the three Wisemen brought to Jesus: frankincense, gold and myrrh. Continue reading...

Morning mist reminds us to get closer to God

Subscriber onlyBella Vista is home to several lakes, and I happen to live on Loch Lomond. There is something special about living on the water, even though we only actually see the lake in the winter. We have not cut down all the trees between our house and the shoreline, so in the summer we live in a tree house and in the winter we live on the lake. While this is good for keeping the water free from debris that could wash down our hill into the lake, not everyone would be happy with our lifestyle. However, the birds love the tree, and when the summer temperatures hit three digits the shade is more than welcome. Continue reading...

What makes today special?

Subscriber onlyI am always amazed at the variety of information that is available on the Internet. Some of it is interesting, some of it is who cares, and probably there is no proof that all of it is true. Continue reading...

Change can be a good thing

Subscriber onlyFor many, if not most of us, September brings to mind going back to school. For students, this can be a positive thing because often summer vacation can get boring after a while and kids miss seeing their friends. Also, with the start of a new school year is the start of a new grade level, new teachers, new routines and new opportunities. For kids, that can be both exciting and scary at the same time, but also something they are used to. Life is anything but stagnant when you are young. As we become more mature we still experience change, but it may not be as rapid and it is not as attached to the calendar as it is for students. Continue reading...

Rotary Club doing good for others in community

Subscriber onlyLife is interesting and offers us multiple opportunities to participate in activities or events that benefit others. As the wife of a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Bella Vista, I occasionally have the opportunity to join club members when they sponsor an event that raises money for use by those in need.
