Small fire spread quickly

Firefighters responded to a brush fire near the intersection of Hallock Drive and Gates Lane Tuesday, March 6.

Battalion Chief Chuck Lawson said that the fire started after a tree fell on a power line and caused the transformer to blow.

"The spark from that caught it on fire and the wind carried it," he said.

The fire was on an empty lot, he said, and there were no injuries or property damage.

When firefighters initially arrived, Lawson said, the fire was no larger than a car hood.

The day's intense winds, he said, helped the fire move and made it more difficult to fight, though the flames were not as severe as the thick cloud of smoke might imply.

While this fire did not damage any property or cause any injuries, Lawson said it is a good example of how fast flames can spread and why residents should keep their yards tidy. If this fire was on an occupied lot, he said, the story could have been very different.
