Mailing a chicken

One Monday morning I went to the Town Center post office to mail a package.

While waiting my turn, I heard a rooster crow.

With all the crazy ringtones available today, I thought it was someone's cell.

No one fumbled for a phone as the rooster again sounded off.

So I asked, "Is there a chicken in here?"

Both postal clerks answered, "Yes."

When I asked "Why?" there was no answer forthcoming.

When it was my turn to be waited on I told the clerk that she must tell me about the rooster, whom I could still hear crowing constantly from another room.

"Well," she said, "you can mail a chicken."

Who knew.

I left with best wishes for the poor rooster and with hopes that he would ship out soon for the well-being and sanity of the postal clerks.

I had the privilege of spending the day at Simple Pleasures for Heroes and Hamburgers on Sept. 30. I am a volunteer for the Bella Vista Courtesy Van, and we were invited to set up a table to introduce our information and services to the nice people of our community. The weather was great, the people attending the event were friendly and generous to us, the Bella Vista Animal Shelter and the Village House.

Ken Miner and his lovely wife opened their gates to the residents of Bella Vista and have worked so hard at creating a special place to share with us all. I had not attended last year's Heroes and Hamburgers, but I hope to attend all of them in the future years.
