Several years ago there was a major fire in a townhome complex near Lake Rayburn where a woman died. There were no working fire hydrants in the area. They had to draw water from Lake Rayburn to put the fire out, wasting precious time. After that, it was said all hydrants would be inspected yearly. Well, this week's paper reported a house fire at 6 Woodlawn, and guess what. There was no working fire hydrant. Fortunately, no one died. Whoever is responsible for servicing the hydrants is not doing his job. If they are inspected yearly, it is obvious that is not enough. In my opinion, the hydrants should be checked every six months or more often. A hydrant must work when needed. It can be a matter of life and death and puts major unnecessary stress on our firefighters. Let's get our priorities right.
