Village on the Lakes Writers & Poets will host Madison Woods for the Second Saturday Reading Series at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Artist Retreat Center, 13467 Lookout Drive in Bella Vista.

Woods will read from her work, and an open mic will follow. Anyone who wants to read a short excerpt from their work is invited to read during the open mic.

Woods is an author, a photographer, an animal lover, nature lover and a "bona fide tree-hugger." She writes non-fiction specifically about nature and also fantasy that is inspired by nature. She is currently working on her first novel.

One of her favorite topics is the native plant, American Ginseng. She writes about Ginseng and works to re-establish habitat for it to survive on her farm near Kingston. She encourages others to do the same and shares information online and at the Huntsville Farmers Market. She is currently working with Compton Gardens in Bentonville to recreate a Ginseng habitat.

Woods has self-published four books in Kindle and paperback. Some of her short stories have been published by Buzzy SciFi & Fantasty e-fiction. Among her publications are "Sustainable Ginseng," "DIY Ginseng, Habitat and Site Assessment Guide," "10 Common Plants Worth Knowing" and "American Ginseng and Companions."

In addition to talking about her work, Woods will also share tips for writers who want to publicize their work online.

The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are requested by calling 479-268-6463.
