Legion to conduct Memorial Day service

The Marshall S. Sayner American Legion Post 341 will be hosting the annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Bella Vista Memorial Garden Cemetery on Buckston Road.

Retired National Guard Chaplain Maj. Mark Golaway will be the guest speaker at the event. Golaway is currently a teacher at the Ambassadors for Christ Academy and a pastor in Eureka Springs, according to John Chelstrom, Legion commander and emcee at the program.

Golaway served in Iraq and rode with a unit that hunted IEDs, Chelstrom said.

Members of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Military Officers Association of America will read the roll call of the deceased.

The Veterans Honor Guard of Bella Vista will provide the colors and present a rifle salute.

The United Lutheran Church Band, under the direction of Lois Carlson, will provide the pre- and post-program music at the event. Bagpiper Jo Ann Tyler will play Amazing Grace at the conclusion of the ceremony. Vocalist Sandy O'Neill will sing the National Anthem and God Bless America.

Pastor G. Lee McClanathan will provide the invocation and benediction.

Those attending the ceremony are asked to bring lawn chairs to sit on during the ceremony.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the American Legion post home at U.S. 71 and Kingsland Road.

n VOLUNTEERS NEEDED -- Chelstrom said volunteers are needed to place and remove more than 200 American flags along the driveways at the cemetery. The flags will be placed at 7 the morning of the ceremony and removed at 3 that afternoon. Those wanting to volunteer should report to the cemetery at the appropriate time, he added.
