Highlands restaurant, city signs discussed

Members of the POA spoke at the recent board meeting to ask for a restaurant in the Highlands Clubhouse. The most recent lessee moved out of the complex before Christmas and at last week's work season, the discussion was about a small grill area attached to the golf shop.

Stephen McKee said he was negotiating with the POA administration about leasing the restaurant when he started hearing rumors. The negotiations were never completed, he said, but he's still interested in the property.

Board Chairman Charlie Teal said the board could not negotiate at an open meeting, but promised to speak with McKee privately. He also agreed to a meeting with all members who have an interest in the restaurant. The meeting, he said, should take place this week.

The board accepted the resignation of Mike Erixon, who is moving out of the area, but will not appoint anyone to replace him. Erixon's term would have expired in May, so the regular May elections will provide his replacement.

Earlier, the deadline to submit a nomination petition for the May election was extended and is now Jan. 30. Teal said the board tries to find at least six candidates when three positions are open.

In other business,

n NEW SOFTWARE -- Bailey reported that the new software system, Total e, will be on line on Feb. 1. Employees are being trained and the project is on schedule. Total e is a point of sale system that will allow more flexibility for operators at the golf shops and other POA amenities.

n TWO PROJECTS -- The board agreed to move money from reserves for two projects.

The POA will split the cost of two large monument signs with the city. The signs will replace similar signs that were removed from either end of U.S. 71 last year. The POA's cost is just under $39,000.

Also, $50,000 will be moved to the general manager's discretionary funds for 50th Anniversary events, although General Manager Tommy Bailey said many of the events have sponsors from the business community.

Dave Barfield, the board liaison to the Recreation Committee said the types of events being considered include bike rides and fishing tournaments.

The POA's Declarations and Covenants are dated May 18, 1965.
