Photographers warned to back up their photos

I thought they were cute and asked if I could take their picture and pointed my camera. I took a few pictures but the girls were so serious. Then, just as I was lowering my camera, they started to smile, so I quickly repositioned the camera and got their smiles.”

A cool, fall-like day greeted the Bella Vista Photography Club for its regular monthly meeting Sept. 13.

Tom Whipple presented the photographer's corner, stressing the importance of backing up photos on an external hard drive.

"It isn't a question of if your hard drive will crash, it is a question of when," Whipple said.

The Oct. 14 forum in the Village Insurance Community Room will be designated to show members the proper way to back up photos. Attendees should bring their laptop and external drive. Whipple will cover "back up, recovery and restore" during the forum.

Dan Snow presented a program on "Aftermath" at September's meeting. Snow is a teacher at Northwest Arkansas Community College and is also a professional photographer. His passion lies in photographing places where people were murdered or died a tragic death. In his photographs, he tries to show how nature moves past the tragedy and shock of sudden death in its own process of healing. His website is dsnowphotography.com.

Winners of the September digital contest, "People," were: Jan Halgrim, first place; Jean Raines, second place; and John Roberts, third place.

Volunteers are needed to work at the Bella Vista Recycling Center. Members should contact Bob Shewmake for details.

For last month's forum, members decided to have a night shoot with available light at the Bentonville Square Sept. 16. Tips for using available light include: use a tripod; set the white balance to a daylight setting -- do not use auto white balance; set aperture at 2.8 to 4.5 for low-light situations; use slower shutter speeds, starting at 100 and adjusting as needed; and shoot in RAW mode.

The next meeting will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Village Insurance Community Room, 2838 Bella Vista Way. J.B. Bell will present the program.

The digital contest is titled "Reflections." Send jpeg images to Jim Deichman at [email protected] by Oct. 10.

Anyone interested in photography is invited to attend. Check out the club's website -- www.bvphotoclub.com.
