Music Program September 29

Our docent, Pat Kirby, and her friend, Michael Cleary, both of Bella Vista, are going to present a program at the museum highlighting the history of music in Arkansas. From the voices of the Quapaws raised in song to former Governor Mike Huckabee rockin' on his bass guitar, Arkansas has long played an important role in musical history. Please join us at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, when we take a look at "Music: Arkansas Style." Admission is free. Everyone is welcome.

Bella Vista Civil War Roundtable

We continue to enjoy a large turnout for our Civil War Roundtable meetings. Admission is free, no dues, just come enjoy our presentations. The next one will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, when Jeff Patrick will be the speaker. His talk is titled "One by One the Boys Pass Away: The Hospital Diary of William Bluffton Miller." In 1862, Miller joined the Union war effort as a member of the 75th Indiana Volunteer infantry. He served as a hospital steward early the following year in Gallatin, Tenn., and later that year was seriously wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, Ga. Using excerpts from Miller's diary, Patrick will relate Miller's experiences, both as a caregiver and as a patient.

Special Exhibits

As a result of the focus on the Civil War that our monthly Roundtable meetings have brought, we now have a special exhibit of an antiquarian collection of Civil War books. All of these books were published between 1861 and 1900. Included is an 1887 edition of the classic Hardtack and Coffee by John D. Billings. The two-volume Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant (1885) will also be on display, as well as Pictorial National Records (2 volumes, 1865), and many more.

Annual Open House

Be sure to mark Sunday, Oct. 27, on your calendar for our annual open house at the museum, starting at 2 p.m. This year we will also include the grand opening of our historic Settlers Cabin. Our contractors, Alvin Murphy, Tom Scully and Scott Morrison, have done a great job getting the cabin ready for visitors. Stay tuned for more information about all the special activities that will be taking place that afternoon!
