Lloyd Okeson and Jean Visnich of the Bella Vista Woodcarvers Club in partnership with the Bella Vista Library hosted a soap carving workshop on Saturday, June 1. Erin Gandy and her three children were there to give it a try.

Gandy said she really enjoyed learning how to carve soap and found it very relaxing. Kinley and Harper carved two items each and were eager to do more of it at home.

Carving soap is fun and can be done by using real soft soap, such as Ivory, and a plastic knife. Start with an easy shape, such as a heart. Draw the chosen pattern onto the bar of soap and begin to carve away the soap on the outside of the pattern until left with only the shape. It's fun and inexpensive. It's a great family memory-maker!

The Bella Vista Woodcarvers Club will again be hosting its Artistry in Wood show Saturday, July 27. The show is free and open to the public. There will be more opportunities to soap carve with your children at the show, which will be held in the family life center of the Bella Vista Assembly of God Church located at 1771 Forest Hills Blvd., in Bella Vista.

Contact the Bella Vista Woodcarvers Club if you would like assistance in hosting a workshop or to obtain additional tips on getting started. The carving club meets at 1 p.m. every Thursday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Visitors are always welcome.
