More than 400 women attended the inaugural English Christmas Tea event in 1993, sparking a tradition that's spanned two decades.

Organized by Bella Vista Community Church, the event kicks off the Christmas season with sandwiches, treats and tea to unite the community, chairwoman Sandra Quinn said.

"It's a tradition that everyone looks forward to," Quinn said. "Everyone can dress up, visit old and new friends and enjoy some tea."

This year's event will be Saturday, Dec. 5, with sittings at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The 1 p.m. event is sold out, but there are still tickets for the 3 p.m. tea.

Six different tables will be decorated with different themes by local churches, including Bella Vista Assembly of God, Bella Vista Christian Church, First United Methodist Church, Highlands Christian Church, Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista and St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Charles and Company, a three-piece band, will be providing musical entertainment at 2 p.m., Quinn said.

This year's theme is "Angels Among Us." Tickets are $10 and the cost covers, tea, snacks and the entertainment. Dining room centerpieces also will be available for $15, Quinn said.

Just as she's done for the past 22 years, Marcia McKenney will be donating red rose tea, Quinn said.

Proceeds from the event will be divided up among local charities. Past recipients include food banks, missions and Cooper Elementary School, Quinn said.

For tickets, call Bella Vista Community Church at 479-855-1126. Quinn recommends attendees carpool if they go to the 3 p.m. sitting.

"It's just a great tradition and a nice way to give back to the community," Quinn said.
