POA, Coast Guard to offer boat safety class

A free boat safety class will be offered from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Riordan Hall, 3 Riordan Drive.

The Bella Vista Village Property Owners Association is partnering with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary to sponsor the Bella Vista Boat Safety Class. The class is free and open to the public.

All boat operators born after Jan. 1, 1986, are required to take the boat safety class. Any participant 18 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. However, parents/guardians are not required to stay for the class. The parent/guardian will be required to sign a parent permission form.

Boaters that take advantage of the safety class will receive a 10 percent reduction in boat registration fees from the association and may be eligible, depending on the company, for a cost reduction for boat insurance.

Every boater that completes the eight-hour class and test will receive boat safety certification. Anyone who has taken the online course but still needs to take the certification test may attend and take the test.

Boaters are invited to bring their boats to class for inspection and certification as a safe boat. Certified boats will receive a U.S. Coast Guard safety sticker.

Participants must register for the class. For more information or to register, email [email protected] or call POA Lakes and Parks Superintendent Vern Olafson at 479-855-5067.
