Photography Club hears about photo training

The Bella Vista Photography Club met June 13 for the regular monthly meeting in the Village Insurance meeting room. There were 15 members and 10 guests. Tom Throne, editor of the Weekly Vista, provided an ice cream cake as a thank-you for all the photos in the Vista and Bella Vista City Guide.

New photos taken in Bella Vista will be needed by November 2015 for the 2016 City Guide.

Kris Johnson presented a slide-show program of his black and white photos taken in New Mexico. Kris studied with Alan Ross, an assistant to Ansel Adams. He uses a Berk and James press camera that requires 4 by 5 film. This bellows camera was built in 1945. He does his own darkroom developing and printing.

Part of the slide-show was titled "Photography Unplugged." He showed motion portraiture using glass negatives with an 8-minute exposure. Other famous photographer's work were highlighted.

He emphasized the need for backing up photos. He suggested printing favorite family photos. "In 50 years technology may not be able to read today's digital photos. Look at floppy discs. At some point jpgs may not be able to be recognized." He works at Shiloh Museum in Springdale in their darkroom.

Mike Walker presented the "Photographer's Corner" with a slide show of his recent trip to the Cowie Winery and Chapel of St. Ann of the Bells. Mike showed the interior chapel and multiple bells ranging from several inches to several feet. The chapel is near Paris, Arkansas.

The June digital contest, "Details/Close-ups/Macro"winners were: First place -- tie, Jean Raines and Mike Walker; second place, Bev Schommer; third place, Ron Dahlke.

The July 11 program will be critiquing photos. Send email photos to be critiqued by the club to Jim Deichman at [email protected]. The July digital contest will be "Keepsakes."

There will be no regular meeting in August due to the Photo-Expo in Little Rock on Aug. 7-8. Any photographer interested in attending should talk to Deichman.

The July 11 meeting will be at 1 p.m. in the Village Insurance community room. Any interested photographer is welcome to attend.
