A high-speed pursuit ended with a car on the Country Club Golf Course last Thursday, Oct. 4.

Kenneth Ashburn, 27, is being held on a $50,000 surety bond at the Benton County Jail in connection with charges of fleeing on foot, reckless driving, improper lane change, driving on a suspended license, improper use of evidence of registration, driving without a seatbelt, possession of a controlled substance, two counts of manufacturing a controlled substance and felony theft by receiving.

Bella Vista Police Lt. Byron Stival said officers observed a black Toyota that the Rogers Police Department was looking for in connection with a shoplifting case. Officers located the vehicle heading north on U.S. Highway 71, and Stival, in an unmarked car, followed the vehicle.

Stival estimated the vehicle was reaching speeds in excess of 90 miles per hour.

"He was weaving in and out of traffic and speeding," he said.

Stival said he couldn't catch up and the driver reached the state line and made a U-turn, heading back into Arkansas.

Officer Jarrod Tapper had the vehicle in sight, Stival said, but because the vehicle was driving in a dangerous fashion, police were ready to call off pursuit. Just as officers were going to disengage, the driver lost control and went off the interstate, landing on the golf course. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Stival said the driver, Ashburn, was transported to the hospital with complaints of pain all over. He was released from the hospital with minor injuries and booked into jail.

Stival said the driver was in possession of a stolen phone from New York, a stolen laptop from Newton County, Mo., and other goods.

Other stolen goods, including prescription medicine, were recovered when police served a search warrant, he said, as well as a "very large" marijuana plant.

Stival said more details will be available once the investigation concludes.

"Obviously, we have more investigating to do," he said.
