Keith Bryant/The Weekly Vista A foundation for the Bella Vista Historical Museum's more-than-a-century-old cabin, dubbed the Settlers Cabin, is complete and the cabin is expected to be moved in the next week or two, weather permitting.

The Settlers Cabin is expected to move soon. Bella Vista Historical Society president Xyta Lucas said the foundation is complete and the cabin could move as early as the first part of December, weather permitting.

While the museum initially expected the Benton County Sheriff's Department to bring its inmate work detail to build the foundation, Lucas explained that the detail became bogged down with other assignments and was unable to build that foundation this year.

A contractor was hired, she said, to dig, place rebar and pour a foundation, then top it with blocks. The concrete and blocks were donated by Cooper Communities, she said.

That contractor had to adjust his measurements, she explained, because the concrete blocks will be covered up with natural rock to create a more authentic appearance, meaning the blocks need to be laid farther inside the foundation's perimeter.

"I'm excited. I've never been involved with a project like this before. I'm hoping that everything will go smoothly with the move," she said.

Once the cabin is moved, Lucas explained, a new porch will be built for it and electricity will be wired to the building to power educational displays.

The move and foundation have been paid for, she said, with the move itself covered by an anonymous donor.

The museum also received grants from the Benton County Historic Preservation Commission, the POA Charitable Giving Committee and the Bella Vista Foundation.

But while the move is covered, the museum is still seeking funds to make improvements and furnish the structure.

Donations are being accepted at www.gofundme.com/cabinfever, and anyone who donates $100 or more may have his or her name inscribed on a plaque to hang inside the cabin.

"There will be additional expenses next year," Lucas said.
