More golf volunteers needed

It was the volunteers that made the first annual Cooper Community Charity Classic so successful, Ruth Hatcher, the tournament's volunteer coordinator said. The pro golfers who came to play the Highlands course last summer loved the attention of dozens of volunteers. Hatcher wants to make sure this year is just as successful.

It's a tall order. There were more than 200 volunteers last year. This year, Hatcher has signed up 150 so far.

There are several volunteer jobs to choose from, but right now she needs more spotters. A spotter watches where each shot goes and helps the golfer find his ball quickly. The golfers don't know the course which has narrow fairways, so extra help speeds up the pace of play, Hatcher explained, and having them makes Bella Vista's only pro tournament special.

The same volunteers will probably help with the Cancer Challenge a week later and then the LPGA tournament which comes to Rogers in late June, she said.

Most volunteers work a four-hour shift, and she has several spots open on Wednesday, June 6, and Thursday, June 7. Volunteer forms are available at any Bella Vista pro shop.

The final round of the tournament is Saturday, June 9.
