Glenn Duffy Elementary students in Gravette attended the monthly Rise and Shine assembly. First-grade students and teachers led portions of the assembly. Staff and guests celebrated as Glenn Duffy students were recognized for class and individual awards.
The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month, PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. The school staff always watches for opportunities to encourage students for excellent character, behavior or effort.
The character word for this month is kindness. This is defined as being friendly, warm-hearted or generous. School nurse Wendy Catron described how students can help each other in kind ways at school. Specifically, she told a story of how students helped each other one morning in the nurse's office. Children offered help and a glass of water to another child that wasn't feeling well. Nurse Wendy reminded all students that we do our best to help others when we can because kindness leads to more kindness.
First-grade teachers taught about this month's social skill, Dealing with anger. Steps to practice this skill include 1) take a deep breath and count to 10; 2) think about good choices you can make (talk it out, walk away to a safe place, find an adult to help); 3) make the best choice. First-grade teachers are Andrea Nall, Tina Wellesley, Candis Jones, Tera Leroy, Margaret Martin, Amanda White and Tabby Crane.
