Bella Vista's HAWK crossing is now active.

The crosswalk connects the school parking lot with a spur from the in-progress Razorback Greenway extension. The Bella Vista city council voted to approve this project August of last year, with a total price of $115,000, $91,000 of which was covered by federal grants.

The crosswalk features a button pedestrians and cyclists can press when they wish to cross, and after pressing the button an auditory prompt is given when it is safe to cross. Red lights illuminate and traffic is exected to stop -- though walkers should still look both ways.

"It's been a labor of love for two years," Mayor Peter Christie said.
