Police have rare high-speed chase

Bella Vista police had a few thrills and, fortunately, no spills Tuesday night when they chased a speeding driver and had to back off in Bentonville.

After spotting a silver car flying by Riordan Road, police began pursuit at 7:42 p.m. This prompted the driver to speed up.

"He kept going faster and faster," officer Travis Trammel said.

The driver blew past Lowes at about 80 miles per hour, according to the dispatch report.

After taking out a few of the road barrels along the off ramp, Trammel said, the driver was doing around 100 to 105 miles per hour down South Walton Boulevard by the dog park, though he slowed down to about 70 to go through traffic and intersections.

"We couldn't even get close enough to get his license plate," Trammel said.

The driver, he said, turned on Southwest I Street and the chase was called off when officers lost track of the suspect vehicle in a sea of taillights.

Pursuits, he said, are not very common in Bella Vista. In seven years with the department, he said, this is the second time he's had to chase a vehicle. Typically, he said, chases don't start because there's nowhere for anyone to run.

Police Chief Ken Farmer said that the department has a strict policy on pursuits, which limits their number.
