Village on the Lakes Writers and Poets

Join Village on the Lakes Writers and Poets on Aug. 9 with Kate Lacy, Madeline Queen and Danna Ray, members of Poets North West, for a Writing Workshop on "The Simplicity of Emily Dickinson's Poetry," Billy Collins book "Taking Off Emily Dickinson's Clothes," using authentic voice in your writing, and information on the veterans writing project.

Lunch will be $5 pizza delivery. Bring your own writing to share, followed by break-out groups for writing/critique and editing/publishing.

Village on the Lakes Writers and Poets meets at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every second Wednesday of the month at the Artist Retreat Center, 13467 Lookout Drive, Bella Vista. Guests are welcome.

Ozark Hill Hunters

The Ozark Hill Hikers, affiliated with the American Volkssport Association, invite all interested walkers to the next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 15, at 1 p.m. Meet at the Presbyterian Church of Bella Vista, 1880 Forest Hills Blvd.

The next scheduled 5k/10k walk will be in Rogers on Saturday, Aug. 19. Registration is at 8 a.m. at Krispy Kreme, 1502 S.E. Walton Blvd., Rogers AR 72712.

The nesting season for this year's bluebirds is just about over. The Bella Vista Bluebird Society needs your backyard counts for birds that have fledged. Report not only bluebirds but any species that has fledged in your yard or trail.

TOPS meets every Monday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Weigh-in starts at 8:15 a.m., and the meeting begins at 9 a.m. Take Off Pounds Sensibly is a support group for people who want to lose weight following a sensible diet. The meeting is also for those who have lost weight and struggle to keep it off and are KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). The group recently installed new officers. The new leader is Jean Hehl.

Sunrise Rotary

The Bella Vista Sunrise Rotary will be meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7 a.m. at Concordia in Bella Vista. Lori Tudor, Arkansas Highway Department deputy commissioner and chief operating officer, will be the guest speaker. All guests are welcome to attend. Breakfast starts at 6:45 a.m.

Porcelain Artists Club of Bella Vista

Bella Vista Master Artist and Master Teacher, Helen Dean (Schumm) Sammarco on July 14, presented a porcelain demonstration in Medway, Mass. She gave a brief history of how this fashionable American art took on its presents.

The late 1800s it was fashionable for American women to study porcelain art in various colleges. China painting was often called the pasttime of the idle rich. Women of the Cincinnati area were no exception. china painting had been introduced to them in the summer of 1873 by Karl Langenbeck. She also displayed the process of grinding minerals, brush strokes, and the basics of a portrait. The demonstration ended with a question and answer session with her audience.

Computer Club

Home networking will be discussed at the Bella Vista Computer Club meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14. Presenter, Joel Ewing, will explain the terminology of networks and hardware that can enable all of your home network-enabled devices to talk to each other and share a single internet interface.

This public meeting is in Room A at Highlands Crossing Center, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd. Bella Vista. The club's website, www.bvcompclub.org, has detailed directions to our meeting room and club information. At this meeting, we will elect officers and two board members. Open house help clinics will be held on Aug. 16 and Sept. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The Genealogy Special Interest Group will meet at 10 a.m. on Aug. 19.

NARFE Bella Vista Chapter 1547

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will hold their next monthly meeting on Friday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at the Hometown Bank, 21196 Highway 71 South, Pineville Mo., just past the Jane Walmart. Donuts will be provided. The chapter's vice president ,Mark Krysl, will discuss some of his international consulting experiences in the area of anti-money laundering. All current and retired federal employees and their spouses are welcome.

Altrusa Clubs

On Wednesday, July 26, the Altrusa Clubs of Bentonville, Bella Vista, Springdale, Rogers, and Washington County worked with the Samaritan Community Center sorting and counting school supplies. The supplies will be used to pack 3,300 backpacks for children in need in our community. The Bentonville/Bella Vista Club meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the month at the River Grill in Bentonville. Come join us and see all the good things our club is doing.

Kingsdale Squares

The Kingsdale Squares will dance at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14, at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista. Kenton Sullivan will be the caller. There will be a mainstream workshop at 6:30 p.m. prior to the dance.

VFW Post 9063

Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet Aug. 17 at 3 p.m. in the Mercy Hospital Conference room at the Mercy facility on Mercy Way in Bella Vista. We will be voting on the issue of consolidation with the Pea Ridge VFW post. Attendance is very important and we hope to see everyone there to vote.

Nebraska Club

The Nebraska Club will hold its summer barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 12, at the Loch Lomond Pavilion. This event is open to anyone who has lived in Nebraska. The barbecue will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m. followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The cost is $11 per person.
