Melody Pond performs at Artist Retreat Center May 7

Special To The Weekly Vista

The sweet sounds of Melody Pond will be flowing from the Artist Retreat Center at 7 p.m. May 7.

Melody Pond is the duo of Emily Rowland and the award-winning Candy Lee. According to the duo, Melody Pond is "the song that dances on the water, echoes on the wind and enchants your ear drums."

The music ranges from fun and powerful to honest and tender. Rooted in the earthiness of folk, Melody Pond keeps it fresh by merging modern indie and a bit of funk and blues with vocals inspired by Billie Holiday and The Boswell Sisters. They have been compared to Rising Appalachia, First Aid Kit and The Ditty Bops. Lee's original songs are passionate and thought provoking and have been called "philosophically giddy."

Lee captured top honors at 2011 Northwest Arkansas Music Awards for "Best Female Singer/Songwriter" and "Best Female Vocalist in a Band." Last year, she was a Grassy Hill New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival.

Formerly performing as Candy Lee and the Sweets, the duo opened for The Lost Gonzo Band, Elephant Revival, Ben Miller Band and Amy Lavere. They have performed at the Yonder Mountain Harvest Festival, Fayetteville Roots Festival and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

The Artist Retreat Center is located in an historic two-story log cabin in Old Bella Vista at 13467 Lookout Drive, right on U.S. 71B. Tickets to Melody Pond are $10. For reservations, call 479-268-6463.
