Living by Faith

I heard recently of a church in Long Island, N.Y., that desperately needed more parking space for their people. They were having to park down side streets, making some walk quite a distance. It became a matter of constant prayer by the entire church.

Pastor Danny Thomas tried to purchase the run-down building next door to the church. It was for sale, but the price was astronomical because of its location. The church people were full of faith, however; they pitched in -- giving special offerings and helping with fundraisers. Meanwhile several other prospective buyers made bids on the lot. When each deal fell through, it looked like God was holding the property for them.

But then, after more than a year of raising money, the lot was sold!

Wreckers demolished the old building and hauled the rubble away. Soon a small medical building was built on the cleared land. It looked as if the rest of the space would be a parking lot -- an empty lot mocking them every Sunday.

One day Pastor Thomas went to the construction site and introduced himself to the owner -- pointing out his church next door. The man said, "Looks like you could use more space. You're welcome to use our lot on Sundays and evenings."

As it turned out, they got their parking lot -- absolutely free!

God knew best! I've heard it said that God is never late, but I've seen Him pass up some great opportunities to be early.

This world has a lot of frustrations and I often wonder why God doesn't wrap this whole thing up. I'm looking forward to the soon return of Jesus Christ, and it can't come too soon for me.

I often ask myself "why hasn't He come back yet?" 2 Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. (NIV)

I thank God that He is patient so that more can be saved. When we think He is delinquent it is not a God promptness problem, it is a patience problem for me. Whether in regard to a church parking-lot situation or long-term prayers for unsaved loved ones -- He is not slow in keeping His promises. His ways are better than our ways if we can "live by faith and not by sight."

I hope that will encourage some of you to patiently wait on God for His plan to unfold. The old hymn says "I'm living by faith and feel no alarm."

God will help us to live this way if we'll let Him.

God bless you and have a great day.
