Prostate cancer golf outing set Sept. 12

The ninth annual Prostate Cancer Golf Outing will be Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Kingsdale Complex. The four-man teams will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $280 a team plus cart fees.

There will be coffee and doughnuts to start the event and a barbecue lunch will be served following play, said Jerry Leonard, who is a prostate cancer survivor and is co-chairing the outing with Roy Baker.

"Come and have a good time," he said. "We're not serious about winning, but we are serious about raising money to find a cure for prostate cancer."

Golf gifts and prizes will be given out and there also will be an auction at the event.

Guest speakers at the luncheon will be Dr. Robert Zimmerman of Mercy Hospital and Chris Conway of the National Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Last year's event raised $21,000 from sponsorships, auction and team fees, he said. The proceeds benefit the National Prostate Cancer Foundation, the Arkansas Prostate Foundation, and Blue Ribbon Golf. All entries are tax deductible.

On Monday, Sept. 14, there will be a prostate cancer education and screening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Allen's Foods parking lot, 60 Sugar Creek Center. Last year, more than 80 men were tested and 14 required further testing, Leonard said.
