Parkinsons support group to meet

Karen and Dan Lombard will be the featured speakers at the Parkinsons Disease Support Group at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at United Lutheran Church.

Karen Lombard, who was diagnosed nine years ago at the age of 48, will relate her PD journey through a life of pills, patches, injections, and therapy, culminating in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery. Prior to her talk, a video will be shown, describing the surgery that implants a device that sends electrical impulses to the brain, thus reducing some of the symptoms of PD.

Her husband, Dan, will describe his role of caregiver during the last eight years and his assessment of the success of her DBS surgery. Together they will cover their reaction to the PD diagnosis, the road they have traveled and now life after DBS. Theirs is a message of hope and determination in their effort to live "normal" lives in the face of PD.

The Bella Vista PD Support Group welcomes both PD patients and those whose loved ones have been diagnosed with PD. A social period with coffee and dessert preceeds each meeting, which is on the second Thursday of each month. The church is located at 100 Cooper Road in Bella Vista.

Parkinson's Disease is a progressive and chronic neurological disease that interferes with the body chemicals that control movement and mood.
