Dates of free astronomy programs set for 2015 at Hobbs State Park

For many years Hobbs State Park--Conservation Area has partnered with the Sugar Creek Astronomical Society to offer free astronomy instruction, special topic programs and night viewing to the general public. That tradition continues in 2015.

Each regular astronomy night (star party) at Hobbs State Park begins with the Sugar Creek group presenting a 30-minute beginner program on finding your way around the night sky. This is followed by a special topic program and finally, weather permitting, night sky viewing through the SCAS's high powered telescopes.

Since the night sky changes every month, there is always something new to view each program.

The following are the free astronomy programs scheduled for 2015:

• March 21 -- Class at 6:30 p.m., and the night viewing begins at 7:30 p.m. This is a special night, in fact, a "Messier Marathon." Night viewing will extend from sundown to sunrise.

• April 25 -- "Astronomy Day" -- Activities begin at 4 p.m. These will include daytime solar observing, teacher in-service, star party and other activities.

• July 18 -- Class at 7:30 p.m., and the night viewing at 8:30 p.m.

• Sept. 12 -- Class at 6:30 p.m., and the night viewing at 7:30 p.m.

• Nov. 14 -- Class at 4:30 p.m., and the night viewing at 5:30 p.m
