Alzheimer's Clinical Trials Come to Northwest Arkansas

Alzheimer's disease is a devastating illness that can rob individuals of their most basic abilities and precious memories. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's.

By 2050, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer's disease may nearly triple, from 5 million to as many as 16 million, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent, slow or stop the disease.

Researchers, including Dr. Gary Linker, principal investigator of Health Initiatives Research, PLLC, a clinical trial site in Fayetteville, are looking for new treatments to alter the course of the disease and improve the quality of life for people with dementia.

"There is a real need to develop new treatment options for this disease," said Dr. Linker. "While participation in clinical trials is not right for everyone, we have a real opportunity here in Northwest Arkansas to advance Alzheimer's disease research. Eventually we hope to expand into other therapeutic areas as well."
