Silent auction items

The Friends of the Bella Vista Public Library need gently-used gift and household items for its annual silent auction fundraiser in November. Suggested donations are sports, pet and household items, plus jewelry, purses, handmade quilts and giftware. Stand-alone, larger items will also be appreciated. Donations may be dropped off at the library.

City Council

candidates' forum

A forum for City Council candidates will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2. The candidates will be given time to relate personal information and then will be asked two or three questions regarding their platforms. Send questions for the candidates to answer to [email protected].

Readers Inc.

Book Club

Students in grades 5-7 are invited to join this lively book club at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Attendees will discuss "The Hobbit" and enjoy Hobbit treats.

First Saturday

for Kids

Kids ages 5-12 are invited to listen to stories being read and then to join in some crafting fun -- painting real pumpkins -- starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4.

Homeschoolers' Corner

Homeschoolers ages 9-18 are invited to attend a new program at 10:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month. Participants will learn how to draw at this free program, which requires registration prior to the session on Oct. 7. Sign-up is available at the front desk. Supplies will be provided.

Sci-fi Book Club

Science-fiction fans are invited to discuss "The Joy Makers" by James Gunn at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the library.

Library expansion kickoff

Help celebrate the kickoff for expanding the library from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday, Oct. 11. The public is invited to stop by the library and enjoy free hot dogs, listen to live Dixieland music and participate in other outdoor activities. Mayor Frank Anderson will discuss plans for the expansion, and the Friends of the Library will have deals on used books. Youngsters will be able to build Lego creations and take part in other family-friendly activities.

New policy

Patrons will not be allowed to check out items if there are any outstanding overdue items on the patron's account. The library requests these overdue items be returned as soon as possible.

Hours of operation

The Bella Vista Public Library's regular hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. The facility is located just east of Town Center at 11 Dickens Place. Call 479-855-1753 or visit www.bvpl.org.

Brainteasers

The library hosts this event on the third Wednesday of each month. The next session will be from 3 to 4 p.m. Oct. 15. Brainteasers packets are available at the front desk.

Mystery Book Club

Fans of all types of mystery, crime and suspense novels are invited to join the club, which meets in the library from 6 to 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. The books of Anne Perry and M.R.D. Meek will be the topic Oct. 15.

Technical Thursday

Those who desire help with computers, e-readers or other "techie" devices are invited to sign up for assistance on Thursday, Oct. 16. Register at the front desk for a time slot between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Color My World

Grade-school children through adults are invited to color their cares away at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Attendees of this free program will use the provided crayons to complete their own reproduction of a famous masterpiece.

FOL Book Club

The Friends of the Library Book Club meets at 9:30 a.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month. The selection for Oct. 22 is "Winter of Our Discontent" by John Steinbeck.

Spooktacular!

This eighth annual family-friendly event, co-sponsored by the library and the Property Owners Association, will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the library. Games, crafts, candy and storytelling will be available for youngsters of all ages. Costumes are encouraged but are not required.

Knitters and Crocheters

Knitter and crocheter wannabes are invited to brush up on their skills and learn some new techniques from 1 until 3 p.m. every Tuesday. Novices will be guided by experienced knitters and crocheters. Participants may bring their current projects or start a new one. Attendees must bring their own supplies.

Exhibits

October's exhibits include items from the Bella Vista Photography Club and a Snow Village collection from Pat Kirby. Anyone interested in displaying a collection should contact Cathy at 479-876-7316.

Floral arrangement

This month's arrangement was designed by Kate Pilarski. Each month, a member of the Bella Vista Garden Club creates an original floral design to be displayed for patrons' enjoyment.

Check out a Kindle

Kindle Paperwhites and Kindle Fires are available for checkout to patrons in good standing. Each device is loaded with a specific genre of book -- science fiction, bestseller nonfiction, western, inspirational, etc. -- and may be checked out for three weeks. See library staff members for the checkout agreement and procedure.

Preschool Story Time

Volunteer storytellers visit the Bella Vista Library at 9:30 a.m. every Friday. Readers are needed. Anyone interested in volunteering should call 479-855-1753.

Encore Books!

The Friends of the Library's used-book store is open six days a week during regular library hours. The store offers everyday low pricing on hardbacks, DVDs, puzzles, children's books, paperbacks, biographies, health and wellness topics and much more. All proceeds from this ongoing fundraiser support the library.

Support the troops

The library has teamed up with The Weekly Vista to send care packages to U.S. military troops serving overseas. Pick up a brochure listing the needed supplies, then drop off donations inside the library.
