Park obtains 1800s artillery frock coat

GARFIELD -- Pea Ridge National Military Park recently purchased a Union Artillery frock coat belonging to Lt. William B. Chapman of the 2nd Ohio Light Artillery.

Born in 1826, Chapman was a prominent attorney in Conneaut, Ohio, before the war. The frock coat was presented to him by the citizens of Conneaut.

On March 7, 1862, Chapman was wounded in this coat while fighting at the Battle of Pea Ridge. He continued to fight until he was forced to leave the battlefield.

The coat is currently on display in the Pea Ridge National Military Park museum along with the bullet that wounded Chapman.

The park is located at 15930 E. Hwy 62. Visit www.nps.gov/peri.
