Candidates file for city offices; deadline is Aug. 15

By press time Tuesday morning, five candidates had filed for municipal office in Bella Vista.

The municipal candidate filing period began on Friday, and will continue through noon on Aug. 15.

In this year's general election Nov. 4, Bella Vista seats up for election include the mayor, city clerk, city attorney and three alderman. All seats are four-year terms.

Prior to the filing period, three people formally announced to The Weekly Vista their bid for mayor, including Alderman Jim Wozniak, Peter Christie and Linda Lloyd.

Wozniak was among the first filers on Friday, and Christie filed his paperwork on Monday.

Mayor Frank Anderson, who has served for two terms, will not seek re-election for the position this year.

Anderson has, however, entered his bid for the council seat in his ward, Ward 2, having filed on Friday.

City Clerk Jane Wilms said she too will not run again for the position. No one has yet filed for the seat.

Currently, the city has no elected city attorney, but employs a full-time staff attorney.

City Council seats up for election include Ward 1 Position 2, currently held by Jerry Snow; Ward 2 Position 2, currently held by Dick Rooney; and Ward 3 Position 2, currently held by Larry Wilson.

Neither Snow nor Rooney are seeking re-election, they said. Wilson on Monday said he has not yet decided to run or not.

Tom Candella filed on Friday to run in Ward 1, and John Flynn joined the race in the same ward on Monday.

Candidates must file with the County Clerk's Office a nominating petition containing signatures from not less than 30 qualified electors residing in Bella Vista.

He or she must also file a political practice pledge, affidavit of eligibility, statement of financial interest and campaign contribution and expenditure forms. These forms will be provided to candidates at the time of filing.

The County Clerk's Office has three locations: 215 E. Central Ave. in Bentonville, 1428 W. Walnut St. in Rogers and 707 S. Lincoln St. in Siloam Springs.

The deadline to register to vote for this year's general election is Monday, Oct. 6.

Early voting for the general election will begin Monday, Oct. 20, and continue through Monday, Nov. 3.
