A Bella Vista man was arrested Monday morning, after a late-night stand-off with the Benton County SWAT team.

Kevin Byers, 45, of York Drive was charged with aggravated assault, a Class D felony; terroristic threatening, a Class D felony; and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.

Police responded Sunday evening to a report that Byers' estranged girlfriend was suicidal, said Capt. Tim Cook. When police arrived, the girlfriend was fine, but directed police to Byers' home, and she said he had sent suicidal messages to her, Cook said.

When officers got to Byers' home, they saw him walking around in the house and heard him tell police to leave his property. They left the premises, Cook said.

Just after midnight, police got another call from Byers' parents and returned to the home to find Byers throwing things against the doors and windows from inside, according to Cook. When police attempted entry into the house through a window, Byers began throwing weights at them, Cook said, and threatened their lives if they entered.

The Benton County SWAT team was called to the scene. After negotiating with SWAT members, Byers appeared on the back porch, where he was tased by SWAT, Cook said.

Byers was taken into police custody at 3:02 a.m., and transported to a hospital shortly after. He was then transported Monday morning to the Benton County Jail.

Byers is being held with no bond set as of Monday.
