Military park to host open house event

GARFIELD -- Superintendent Brenda M. Waters has announced an open house for the community to discuss the U.S. Highway 62 mitigations project and environmental assessment for Pea Ridge National Military Park that is currently available for public review.

"The purpose of this mitigation project is to identify a safe and convenient access road and parking for our visitors at key features within the park, while at the same time protecting and preserving the cultural and natural resources," Waters said in a news release. "As a result of the relocation of Highway 62, a new access and improved circulation to the park is being proposed that will provide visitors additional opportunities to learn about the Civil War battle that occurred here."

The public is invited to attend the open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, to learn more about the proposed new access and improved circulation in the park. The event will be held at the Pea Ridge National Military Park visitor center, which is located at 15930 E. Highway 62 in Garfield.

An electronic copy of the Highway 62 mitigations and environmental assessment can be accessed by going to the park's Planning, Environment and Public Comment website -- http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=46500. In addition, a hard copy of the document is available at the Pea Ridge Library, 161 E. Pickens Road, in Pea Ridge and at the park's visitor center.

The public review period for this project will close on Sunday, Jan. 4. The public's participation in the development of this project is desired and will be greatly appreciated, the news release states.

Pea Ridge National Military Park preserves the site of and commemorates the March 1862 Civil War battle that helped Union forces gain control of Missouri. The park is located 10 miles north of Rogers on U.S. 62.
